The emergence of China as a significant participant in IC design — rather than solely in IC manufacturing and assembly — was one of the most consequential industrial transitions of the early twenty-first century. From Assembly to Architecture

This EDA investment was not entirely altruistic. It was a strategic market penetration decision: the vendor that trained the next generation of Chinese IC designers on its toolchain would capture an installed-base dependency with very high switching costs. Conference exhibitions were a primary vehicle for this capability-building — EDA vendors presented at technical sessions, sponsored workshops, and used exhibition booth space to introduce their tools to engineering audiences at every career stage.

Foundry Access and the Tape-Out Economy

A functioning fabless industry requires foundry access — the ability to submit chip designs for physical manufacturing at semiconductor fabrication facilities. SMIC's domestic foundry capacity, combined with the ability of Chinese fabless companies to engage with TSMC and UMC for advanced nodes, created the manufacturing infrastructure that domestic IC design companies needed.

Foundry representatives were consistently present at IIC Expo events, engaging with prospective design customers across a range of interaction formats: formal conference presentations, targeted technical briefings, and informal exhibition floor conversations. The exhibition environment accelerated the foundry relationship-building process that was a prerequisite for a company's first tape-out.

The Exhibition Record of Domestic Progress

Perhaps the most historically significant aspect of the fabless ecosystem development as documented in exhibition archives is the rate of competitive advance. Companies that appeared on the exhibition floor as small domestic challengers in early years were, a decade later, significant global semiconductor suppliers.
